The whole point is that if you apply for and get a residence visa at a cost of £75 in London you are obliged to put in for your residence permit within one month of arriving in Turkey - the actual wording is: "After obtaining the visa, one is required to register with the local police headquarters within a month following the arrival in Turkey and obtain a residence permit"

Thus, there is no need to go to the expense of paying £75 for a residence visa when you can do exactly the same by paying £10 for a tourist visa.

Harem totally agree with you on this. This has been mentioned loads of time since I have been a member here. I was first warned about it I think by a post by our old friend "Starman".

If people do not want to listen then by all means pay the £75.00 to the Turkish Embassy in London. It will help pay Ken Livingstons congestion charges or the staff tea fund.

Andywebb, I think some people are deliberately mis-interpreting what we are telling them. Never mind, I'm glad there are people like you out there who do understand.

No deliberate mis-interpretation as you posted a 12 month visa and adviced to apply for permit within 1 month.

If you had posted it was a requirement (Law) and not adviced to apply for permit within a month it would have been clear.

Now we know it is law people should be adviced to apply for permit here and not apply for visa in UK.

Re: turkish visa

We went to London and done the visa thing and on arriving here in Turkey did`nt pay the £10 tourist visa and when we went to Aydin did`nt have to show any paperwork they just gave us a 5 year residency visa/permit so we were happy.
We would and have advised our friends not to bother as you can get residency permit without going to London and just pay your £10 when you come in then go and get your visa at Aydin.

Why would you be refused when you get here if you have been excepted in London ?
As said in earlier posts dont both save your money.

This is better still - A 5 year permit as you had got the 12 month visa prior to travelling. The £75 fee then was worth it then as it stopped you going around all the offices getting this signed and stamped initially and each year if only given a 12 permit.

Wonder if Mugla Police would do the same.

Re: turkish visa

you still pay the same for a resident PERMIT with or without a resident VISA from london, and buying a 5 yr permit works out very little difference to getting it annually, there has been rumors around that the permit system will change and so many are doing it annually ,because once you have bought a 5 yr permit they probably won`t give you a refund if the system changes.

This sounds confusing, you are saying you went to London paid for the visa for what duration ( you do not specify what you paid in London), came to Turkey, I understand about not paying the £10.00, went to Aydin and they gave you a 5 year residence permit at no extra cost?

My wife and I were not given any other option than 1 year permit.

If we had been offered 5 years I would have taken that instead of going annually. Now if having a 12 month visa at £75 had enabled me to have been issued a 5 year permit I would have taken that option as looking at the difference in costs there are reductions between 1 and 5 year permits which are more than the £75.

OK they may change the rules but this rumour has been around for nearly 2 years.

Does anybody know the different costs for different nationals? Understand they differ greatly depending on Nationality.

By the way my wifes permit was over 120YTL higher than mine as she is not from UK.

Re: turkish visa

pretty sure you don`t need the london visa to get a 5 yr permit,
last price quoted was 2,600ytl for 5yr and 568 for 1yr
