For those of you that read the Bodrum Observer this is a bit of an update.
For those of you who have no idea what I am talking about I will try to make it simple although I have my doubts that I will be able to explain it properly.
In March 2007 there was a census which should include all foreigners who have residence visas. I think a couple of census people came round to houses taking details. We saw them next door but they ignored us. So we ignored them, until the Bodrum Observer brought up the possibility of a fine if we did not register.
We did it today and I have to say that it was the easiest bit of bureaucracy that we have encountered in four years of residency. You have to go to your Municipality's "Fen Imar Isleri" (I do not have a Turkish keyboard the S has a squiggle) We had no idea where this was but had to pay our water bill so asked and it was just upstairs. We collected a small bit of paper giving our correct postal address. Then we went to the Kaymakamlik Building which in Bodrum is where the Tapu office is. Get yourself registered with the Adrese Dayali Nufus Kaydi where you will need your residence visa, we also took any other documents we thought might be needed. We were then given two pieces of paper, one each, and we now have to take four copies of our residence visa with the papers to our Muhtar. We should be issued with a temporary ID number which is at some stage supposed to replace our tax number. We have not received this yet.
I have to say that this whole procedure took us less than an hour and no charge. We still have to go to the Muhtar but hopefully this will be as easy.
All the officials that we met today made us feel very welcome and they were very helpful even if they did not speak English.
