British Citizenship

My husband is applying for his British Citizenship this week. Does he have to tell the Turkish Consulate what he is doing? I did hear that if they do not tell the Turkish authorities within a certain amount of time their Turkish Citizenship is withdrawn.

I'm asking this question because if I mention this to him he will get into a total panic as he does with all things bureaucratic!

Re: British Citizenship

Some countries like Germany and Belgium don't allow dual citizenship so if you want to take citizenship from them you have give up your Turkish citizenship. This doesn't apply to the Uk tho'.

I'm sure I heard that if you have dual citizenship there are certain things here you cannot do like be a Member of Parliament ( as your loyalties may be split) so it may be that your husband will have to inform someone once his Uk citizenship is thru.

Sorry I can't be more help and good luck to your husband.

Re: British Citizenship

l hopr this will help you,it will be best if you contact your country of origin,to the authorities, when becoming a British citizen.
l copied an article from their webpage, for you to read.
You do not need to give up your present citizenship or nationality to become a British citizen.

Many countries will not let you have two nationalities (dual nationality). If you become a British citizen and are a national of a country which does not allow dual nationality, the authorities of that country may either regard you as having lost that nationality or may refuse to recognise your new nationality. Before you apply for British citizenship you may wish to check what your position would be with the authorities of the country of which you are a citizen.

Re: British Citizenship

My wife was given British Citizenship and had to inform the Turkish authorities within a year (if I remember the time-frame right). It was a very simple process of filling in a form at the foreign liason office in Muğla.

She applied for citizenship while we were in the UK but it wasn't granted until after we had moved back out to Turkey. I think the whole process took 1 year although we delayed the ceremony part for cheaper travel reasons (i.e. the first date given was mid-august).

Anyway I would assume that he can just complete the same process at the consulate.

Re: British Citizenship

thank you turtle-webs, I have checked the Turkish Consulate website with my very poor turkish and I have downloaded a vey small form. It just asks when you took British Citizenship and we have to send a copy of the letter from then with 4 photos. It seems a painless procedure, however I am very curious to know how the Turkish authorities would know that you have taken British Citizenship, the Home Office wouldn't tell them.

My husband now I have told him is adamant that we do this, apparently there is a hefty penalty to pay.

Other people I have spoken to who have turkish partners have not done this and have said it is not at all necessary. Best err on the side of caution I say.

Re: British Citizenship

The lady that dealt with my wife said as well that many do not do it and nothing happens against them but said with everything here you don't know when they will decide to enforce it.
