Re: Advice needed urgently
thats strange...you would need to see her visa yourself in case she has overstayed her dates...thats the only way you can sort this out.
Never heard that one Sue..the 20 year thing....was that a thread on the forum?

Re: Advice needed urgently
If they came asking to see my visa they would be out of luck because I have renewed my passport since I've been here and the visa was in the old one. I would imagine that this lady has also renewed her passport (more than once) since she has lived here. A lot of people have never had a residence visa, having settled on a tourist 90 day visa and then obtaining a residence permit.

Re: Advice needed urgently
Thanks folks but she definitely has her residents permit.
She only renewed it last month for 2 years ( She's nearly 80 ! ).
She's always very careful about that sort of thing.
I read something about the 20 year rule but it was a long time ago.I can't remember where from.
I'll let you know what the police say tomorrow.

Re: Advice needed urgently
Just found it .........with a bit of help.
"Foreigners who wish to stay in Turkey for more than three months are required to apply for a Residence Permit by filling out a Declaration of Intent form. Residence Permits are issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and are generally valid for a maximum duration of five years. The term may be increased or decreased by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, after consultation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Technically, Residence Permits may only be extended four times. However, with assistance from a well-connected attorney one can generally find exceptions to the rule within the Turkish labyrinth of red tape. "
The web site was "expatfocus.com/expatriate-turkey-visas-residency"

Re: Advice needed urgently
Panic over.
We went today and showed her passport and resi permit which they photocopied.
They asked a couple of question- Did she have a car? Did she have an income ? and confirmed which mahalle she lived in.
Then said 'Thanks very much !!!!!'
I said that she'd been very worried and they duly apologised but still no explanation so I asked if this was something they were going to be asking all Brit residents to do they said yes.
It seem like an info-gathering mission - maybe by our new Chief of Police.
Tonight I've found out that several other people who have recently renewed their resi permits in Kuşadası have been phoned up and told to go to the police station with their paperwork.
As for the 20 year rule my friend hasn't had a resi permit for the full 20 years so I don't know if that rule is still in force.
