I have recently had my handbag stolen with my passport and residency in it. I am told by police to get a copy of my residency I must pay 81 lire plus half of what I paid for it originally in this case half of two years. Has anyone else heard of this.

There was a article about this in the paper last year - same situation.
Some one had had their bag stolen and had to pay half the cost of their visa again.

I have a vague recollection that there is also a requirement that you publicise its loss in an official journal. Not sure about this.

A friend or ours is in the process of going through this and has been asked for the FULL amount with no credit. I am interested if this is written down anywhere. This is in the Fethiye area.

This seems to answer the question on another thread - always carry photocopies of passport and residency permit, not originals.

Thanks for all your replies is looks like I will have to cough up then. I forgot to add I do not normally keep take these things with me when I go out at night. I only took them because there had been a lot of break ins in the villas around me. I thought they would be safer with me. Expensive mistake. The theft was reported to the Jandarma, and I have made a statement.

I've just read in our local paper that you have to pay from the date you report it lost until the date it is due to expire.

It could be worse.It could have been a five year one that you'd only got a week ago !!!!
