Talking Citizenship in Turkey

I have been here in Turkey for just over 4 1/2 years now i will be applying for my citizenship next year, in my own right even though i have been with my boyfriend for 5 years now, not married. I speak quite good turkish but i am going to brush up on the grammer you know what i mean stringing all together into sentances. Does anyone know exactly how much turkish are you required to realy know. I heard as long as you can get by saying things like goodmorning how are you that sort of thing thats fine, but i know all that and alot of people do dont they. Can anyone tell me if they have done this lately and what else did they have to do to get there citizenship.

İ think it varies by area. Which area are you in? İ know someone in similar circumstances to yourself who had her test recently. She may be able to enlighten you but about the Bodrum area test. All İ will say is it was not a good experience for her and İ believe she is still getting over it

Now if this was UK, under Equal Ops laws, you would be able to take a friend in to translate for you.

Re: Citizenship in Turkey

My test was in Mugla last April and although not difficult the actual situation was and İ found the panel very rude.

Nowadays the test is carried out in Bodrum and you were required to read a newspaper, read from a novel and supply the name of your Turkish teacher among other things.

İ always find that Turkey generally reacts to whatevers going on in the UK so the more hoops their citizens have to jump through in the UK the more Brits have to here. So watch out for a full blown citizen test one day

Unhappy Re: Citizenship in Turkey

Well i have just had one of the worst experiences of my life --
i am also applying for citizinship - got all the necessary papers together - translated and noterised-- the only thing i needed was the Turkish Speaking certificate -
everybody had told me that this was going to be easy - i have lived her for 11 years so my turkish is " not bad "
All my friends told me that they went to Mugla for the test - and had about 4 months to wait - I was called to Bodrum - 2 days after i had been to apply !!
That put me in abit of a panic
Well 2 hours before the time i was due to go we had a phone call from the office asking my partner to go to a certain shop in the centre of Bodrum and buy 3 kilos of Black Sea Borek !! -- he took this as a sure sign that they would pass me as it was like a bit of bribery ( normal in Turkey apparantly )
Well we went armed with the Borek - they seemed very happy to receive it
I was sent into a room with 3 men and 2 women - the women looked very stern at me - I DO believe that the women in authority really HATE us cos we are taking their men
The 3 men were chatting to me in Turkish and I felt I was answering them very well .
After about 20 minutes - when they had stuffed their faces with my Borek - one of the women asked me which Turkish course i had been on and what was my teachers name - well i hadnt been on a course - its all self taught !
The other woman then got a thick book from her handbag - opened it in the middle and asked me to read 2 pages of it - i was by now a wreck and i did read 5 lines but to be honest it just sounded like gobble de gook !! I then said " sorry but i dont really read Turkish Novels especially when i hadnt even got the jest of the story !!
I also said that my partner also speaks almost perfect Enlish but no way could he read a English story book like that !
Anyway next a paper was produced and i was asked to sign - i was told that i had failed the test because i couldnt read the book
Well by this time i was in tears - i felf like telling them that i wished they had choked to death on my F-----g Borek !!
I am sure if it had been up to the men i would have passed !
So that is MY experience -- it has COMPLETELY shattered my confidence and i dont feel like applying again - although i have spent about 500 ytl in total with Health reports - translations and notery fees
WHY did i have to go to Bodrum - ??? i dont know the answer
Sue

Hard luck, Sue. Next time hold the borek until after you've done the test.
