Work Permits?

Merlin,

Thought maybe you could help with this? a member on another forum tells me that if you set up a limited company in Turkey, then manage that company but do not do the physical work yourself, i.e. if you open a bar, you employ others to wait an serve the drinks, if you open a building company, you employ others to labour and lay bricks etc. Obviously the workforce would be local or people with permits.

Then as long as you have a resident permit, you are legal to carry on your business?

Sonds risky to me.

Anyone have experience of this?

That does appear to be the case, you can setup a company and run it, and as long as you don't employ yourself, in which case you will need to apply for a work permit as well.

I'm suer merlin will be able to confirm details for sure.

So I can set up a company, co-ordinate the workers and live off the profits after paying any over heads?

KKOB, it's not the theory that concerns me, it's the practice!

I think this is the case in any country where you can setup a business as a foreigner, as long you operate a business and pay your taxes and are not taking job opportunities that would be offered to locals, in most cases you are offering jobs to the locals, there should not be any problems.

You can even do that as a non resident, so you don't even need a resident permit, but having one is more practical.

If in doubt it is always worth confirming with a professional, you should check that with the accountant who will setup your company.

Thanks Mushtaq,

I seem to have read thousands of posts about people trying, and then giving up on getting a work permit in Turkey. Many have bought a property out there, like the life style and people then the next step is to move out and make your living. So far I know about 6 people who have moved out and are legally earning their living.

Maybe this option is so simple that many have missed it?

Thanks for your help

It's not so simple in many cases. Most new businesses I've started 3 - cannot survive in the early months/years without a huge, hands-on, commitment by the owner. I think it could be very easy to cross the line as far as the Turkish authorities are concerned. And if the business was struggling and needed your active help it would be very difficult to stand aside and watch it sink because of rules.
