Impounding your Car at Bodrum
Hi,
My Personal Visa runs out in about 3 weeks so I need to get it renewed, the quickest/most pleseant way would be for me to drive to Bodrum and hop on a ferry to Kos. Now as I have a Car on my passport its not that easy so I need to Impound the Car at Bodrum Customs prior to my travel.
Just trying to find out if anyone has done this and can explain the procedure as it seems alot of others are/will soon be in a similar situation and I know I can pay 200 Euros and take the car but it seem a little excessive if I can impound it.
Take care
Marc

Re: Impounding your Car at Bodrum
Marc,
Not just any customs will take this and you need to find your local "oto ithalas" as each province usually has one so for you it could be Mugla or Dalaman or Milas.
Once you have found out where it is then go there the day before you leave, as the paperwork is a nightmare.
There is another option, apply for a residence permit, then you wont have to leave or park your car in customs. You can get them for 3 months despite what anyone else would say.

Re: Impounding your Car at Bodrum
Marc, what starman says is correct, just get your residence permit and then you wont have to go through this. But I am wondering how long they gave you for the car? when we brought ours in we could only bring it in for 6 months, then the car had to be out for 6 months, and apparently you too have to be out during that time, we got around it cause the car was in my name, i transfered the title to my husband's name, then the next time, my husband brought it in on his turkish passport, yada yada yada....then we had to leave the car in kos for 6 months, but we overstayed, the fine was huge, and we ended up donating it to the greek government. It was a pity too....it was a gorgeous jeep from the states.......boo hoooooo oh well....life goes on.....
Maybe if I had known starman then he could have advised me on how to do this the proper way........ right starman?????
in the end, it was such a nighmare, it wasnt worth bringing it over from the states.........

Re: Impounding your Car at Bodrum
Hi Starman, parrot
Thanks for the replies, Today I have found out from the horses mouth that The facility for bodrum is 250km away in Izmir so that rules that out of the equation.
For those who dont have the problem until after May 1st There are much cheaper alternatives in the summer from Cesme - Chios (110 Euros return, half the price of the Bodrum to Kos ferry) and Dikili - Lesbos.
I'm going to call Izmir tomorrow to find out what their answer would be but dont hold your breath, somehow i can see me doing a bodrum - Kos run and paying the 300 Euros ah well at least I can get some bacon/sausages while im there
Take care
Marc

Re: Impounding your Car at Bodrum
I say it would still work out cheaper for you to get the 3 months residence. You have up untill the day before your visa expires to apply.

Hi Starman. Are you sure about not having to have your imported car impounded if you have a Residents Permit. ? I ask only because I am in the same situation and having a Five Year Permit was told by Antalya Customs that I had to have my car impounded when I left the Country without it.
I have had to do this Three Times since Jan. 1 and will be back again on Friday this week. You are correct, the paperwork is increadible and Three hours to get out and another Two hours to get the car out when you return.
If you are correct, what a lot of pain this would save.I would appreciate your comment.

Re: Impounding your Car at Bodrum
The reason I mentioned to Marc was because he had to go because he was on a 3 month tourist visa, if he got a residence then there would be no reason to leave the country.
If you have a work permit then you get a "taahutname" so you dont have to leave your car at customs which I carry when I leave the country. If you just have a normal residence then you will need to goto customs when you leave the country. So the red tape you have to put up with I am afraid.
