what are the differences between visas'

Can someone explain to me what a retirement visa is?
How does it differ from a residence permit?
Who can get them?
Are they cheaper?
Does it have to be renewed every 5 years?
And how do you apply for one?
Etc.etc.

I phoned the Izmir Police Station and talked to the yabanci section and the way it was explained to me is that it is a normal residence permit only it will say that you are retired inside. You still apply for them at the police station and the cost is about the same and they are available for the usual terms (1-2-3-4-5yr.).You will need papers from your home country to prove your retirement income and these may need to be noterized. He also told me that some yabanci offices will still ask to see bank statement showing you have money in an account as well. They also told me that some police station yabanci offices will ask for papers from your countries consulate or embassy that are noterized and sealed documenting that you are retired. I spoke with an officer named Kamil at the Izmir police station and if you would like more information you can contact him at:0(232) 489 05 00

Re: what are the differences between visas'

We are moving to Datca later this year and retiring early, we will not be paid a pension for some years. We hope to live on interest from savings, after reading the post about residence permits I am now worried that we will not be able to provide the necessary documents ie pension paperwork etc, we could provide a bank statement showing savings but that would be all. Anyone else retired "early" and managed to get a residence permit without showing a pension book. Also we have to set up a company to own our land and build on it since the change in the law, does any member know whether that will affect our residence permit.

If it makes you feel better I have a residence permit and I am "retired" but not offically, so all you will have to do is show you have money (about $300 USD per a month per a person) for a residence permit. You need the retirement stamped in your permit if you want to import your car to stay in Turkey longer than 6 months. You may also need it to import household furniture as well but I may be wrong on that.

Many thanks for the reply, if we have a residence permit can we then bring over a car and keep it longer than the six months, it may be cheaper to buy a left hand drive car in the Uk and then drive over with our personal belongings than wait and buy a car in Turkey as we have been told they are expensive.

Re: what are the differences between visas'

thanks Eileen, we had read that it was difficult to bring a car over, it would just make it easier to bring the personal belongings that wont fit into two suitcases, we would probably have another 2 or 3 suitcases full. As we have already read horror stories about sending boxes over by freight we might have to bring my daughter over for a week and use her allowance. Then get any visitors to bring other bits that we dont need straight away

Re: what are the differences between visas'

You would only be able to keep your car here for longer than 6 months if retirement is stamped in your permit. You would still have to pay a deposit and such and that is where it gets very expensive and most people decide it is easier and cheaper to buy a car once here in Turkey.
