residence permit validity after employment termination

Hi there,

I would be grateful for advice from experts over here.

I entered Turkey on a work permit in February, residence permit was issued soon after for 1 year duration. I am now being shifted to another office outside Turkey so I am assuming my work permit in Turkey has to be officially cancelled.

I wanted to check if I can keep hold my residence permit until it expires even though my employment in Turkey will officially terminate? I would still be visiting Turkey often and it would make life easier if I can retain the RP.

If not, can I get some sort of a long term business visa? I will continue visiting our Turkey office for meetings but would not be doing any work as such.

If not, can I get the Residence Permit converted to Tourist Residence Permit?

If all three of the above options are not possible, can I still enter on a tourist visa? (90/180 day), I am British. My concern with this is that on their immigration system they will see that I have been in Turkey since February and if I enter again in May on a tourist visa they may say that I have already stayed for full 90 days in the last 180 days and hence I cannot enter Turkey for another 3 months (even though the 90 days were spent on a RP)

Appreciate your views on how best to manage the situation...

thanks a lot!

I think I'm right in saying that as you got the RP because you were working it will cancelled as you have now left the job.

You will need to get a Tourist visa next time you enter Turkey. It should show on the system that you were working so they will understand.

If I'm wrong I hope someone will correct me.

Under normal circumstances, when you leave a job the associated RP becomes invalid 28 (or 30) days from cessation of the employment, as far as I remember.

It sounds like this is an issue for your employers to deal with - if you're still employed by the same company then the simple solution is not to cancel the WP. The fact you're working outside TR for extended periods doesn't make any difference as long as its the same employer and the job description hasn't changed significantly.

If you're keeping an address in TR, and your employer wont keep the WP in place, then get yourself a RP before you leave.

Re: residence permit validity after employment termination

Please remember that a new law was passed very recently, it means that anyone who remains outside of Turkey for more than 6 months will have the RP revoked.

President Gül approves law on foreigners

The law stipulates that foreigners who stay in Turkey for more than 90 days should apply for a residence permit. The residence permit will become invalid if not used for six months.

Doesn't come into effect until April 2014, so nearly a year on old rules.

Re: residence permit validity after employment termination

thank you all for the quick replies.

John, I work for a MNC and I am now employed by one of their offices outside Turkey - they will be paying my salary, not Turkey any more. I will continue to visit Turkey for meetings etc, claiming expenses on receipt basis rather than a local salary. this also means i wont have a fixed address.

I think the best course is that I surrender my RP and come back on Tourist visa as and when required.

The only question I have is that given that I have already spent 3 months on a RP, when I re-enter immediately on a tourist visa, can the officer say that I cannot enter turkey for another 3 months as I have already spent 3 months (although under RP)?
