Re: Lose Residency

I don't know if this is true or not.
Without meaning to offend, I fail to see why anyone should expect to have the benefits of residency in any country, if they are not actually living there?

How about someone working on a contract out of Turkey? My mate in the Merchant Navy was regularly away for more than 6 months

Your friend would be registered for taxation in his main country of residence. Many moons ago, my 1st husband and I were also merchant navy, spending on average 8 months at sea and 4 months on land over a 12 month period. We were British residents, taxes paid to Britain, albeit we were not often home.

I have a British friend, resident in Kuşadası.
His work as as a textile consultant takes him to Egypt, Peru, India and Söke in Turkey but he ensures that he always has more than 6 months in Turkey inside each calender year as all his taxation is dealt with here.

His total time in Turkey has to be verified each year with his tax returns and this is shown by all stamps that show in his passport.
In this way, he stays within the law, at the same time retaining his residency.

Howabout for anyone owning a holiday home in Turkey and wanting to spend say 4 or 5 months there every summer, the only way at present to do that is to buy a residents permit and the cheapest way to do that is to buy a 5 year one. However if this new rule does come in, then that means buying a 1 year RP every year.

Re: Lose Residency

From 10th April when the new law comes into effect,
If I want a 6 month residency permit, must I apply to the Turkish consulate in my own country?

It would be much easier and straight forward if, on entering Turkey, I could buy a 6 month or one year visa.

Re: Lose Residency

This was taken from the Hurriyet Daily News, don't know how reliable they are but....

ECONOMICS - Residence permit rules to be eased for foreign house buyers

Residence permits have been the main hurdle for foreign buyers who plan to buy property in Turkey. According to existing regulations, foreigners can stay in the country for a maximum of three months on a tourist visa, after which time they must leave the country for another three months before returning. The residence permit receiving processes also can be exhaustingly long.

“We’re trying to increase these [tourist visa] periods to six months or one year because many visitors to our country wish to stay for more than three months,” Turkish Environment and Urban Planning Minister Erdoğan Bayraktar said, confirming the news.

Seems they are thinking of trying to solve the problem of people coming over for 4/5 months at a time?

Sara

Forgot to mention that it seems that rules for foreign people owning companies to own houses here are also changing, I'm trying to find the link that I read but it stated that at least one of the directors of the company is to be a permanent resident in Turkey, so if you own your holiday home through a company then you may have to re-think. When I find the link I will post it.

Re: Lose Residency

That article says that you lose it if you stay out of the country for 12 months.

"This does not mean that once your residency has started - i.e. you are resident in Turkey, your residency will become invalid if you subsequently stay out of Turkey for a period of 6 months. The 6 month deadline only applies from the date you apply until the date you actually begin using your residency.
However, with long term residency, if you stay out of Turkey for more than one year, your residency permission may be cancelled."

So a year in one go and you lose residency. That's how it reads to me.
