Question Residence/work Permit: Police checks?

Hi all,

I have had a residence permit in Ankara for the last 6 months with no hassles - no questions, no police checks etc.

I've now got a work permit and moved to a village (<6000 people) where I'm the General Manager of a company. The nature of the job is being outside every day and travelling substantially.

I recently got a call from a contact in the city police to say that the local police had been to check on my work place/residence (same building) numerous times and not found me there and to go check in with the local Police asap.

Ive then been into the station numerous times after tip-offs. Each time with different contacts of mine explaining they know me, the work I do which is outside work, I travel a lot, but weve met with the same resistance that I am not living/working where I say I am. Reasoning with them is useless and always ends in arguments.

My city Police contact issued another letter to the local Police stating that I am often away from the office, travelling etc. This wiped the inspection slate clean and they would start randomly checking me again when the letter arrived. The local Police said they would contact me when they received this letter.

I got a call today from a contact to be in the house for the next 10 days because the letter arrived, and according to him the Police had planned not to tell me about the letter and to start their surprise visits today. He said this was my last chance, otherwise the Police will say Im not living/working here and try to cancel my residence/work permit.

In my line of work sitting inside all day is not feasible - I work outdoors 7am - 5pm. No matter how many times I've tried to explain this, no one seems to care or listen. I feel like they have some sort of vendetta against me.

I aim to call into the station tomorrow with the legal documents the company has for where I will be working, saying they are welcome to call the local Jandarma and Mukta as they know where I am, and to come around to the house anytime after 5pm.

Has anyone experienced anything like this? Or know what the regulations are regarding Police checks?

I would get a lawyer involved to send a letter from your firm explaining your travelling role. That should settle it, and if they do decide to take you to Court the lawyer will explain it easily.

Hi Stuart,

I manage a mining company, so I am in the mountains everyday overseeing our work (which covers over 300Km2 just in this region). I also check in with the Jandarma so they know where we are and what we are doing.

It's just every time I try to explain to the Police about the nature of the work, they don't want to hear it. I can't sit in the house waiting for their random visits, otherwise no work can get done.

If they cared to come to the house in the evening they would see my belongings, the office, work equipment, muddy clothes etc. They also see us regularly driving our filthy pickups through the village. I saw the Inspectors this morning as I was on my way to work, both of them smirking at me - this in contrast to my police contact who waved and smiled when he saw me.

I have spoken to our work permit consultant who suggests speaking with the Police again, and if that doesn't work to contact the Ministry (of labour?) directly and air my concerns.

Other than that I am writing a diary noting where I am at what times, who I saw etc. and will also get the Company Director to write a letter with our legal work areas attached to explain where I am and what I am required to do for my job.

It doesn't seem like a normal inspection to me, it is almost like they are out to get me... it's a real nightmare!

Re: Residence/work Permit: Police checks?

I do sympathise with you. sounds like somebody somewhere does not want you working for some reason. normally all checks are done prior to issue of work permits/residence .
how can you be at home when you are at work legally.!!
I would take advice as suggested from a lawyer a consultation should only cost you around 100tl. the police here are very wary of lawyers not like in the uk. sometimes just a phone call from a lawyer can work wonders. I have seen it happen a few times.
I have not much faith in the consulate as they have limited powers but maybe letting them know would do some good. letting your employers know is a very good idea .
Good luck anyway .hope you get it sorted out soon and find plenty of what you are mining for! let us know how your getting on.
