Re: Expats stranded in Turkey

ive just heard this afternoon of a woman who lives in alanya who had applied for her new RP then heard news that her sister in the UK was dying
..she went to the Emiyet to ask if the paper the police had given her to say her RP was being processed was enough for her to leave he country as it was an emergency..they said it wasnt and that she had to go back for a different paper a couple of days later

They gave her another piece of paper and said that should be ok for her to leave

..when she got to Antalya airport she was arrested..and spent a few hours until things were sorted out..but because of the delays in paper work her sister sadly died the day she got to the UK

there really needs to be some coordination with the departments here its too bad and the UK needs to come to some agreement with Turkey

Re: Expats stranded in Turkey

How many of these stories are apocraphyl I wonder . Yes there have been problems and inevitably with a new system to which an emergency procedure was bolted on at the last minute there will be and have been problems for a number of individuals and you have to sympathise with those that are real and particularly in this case but every time there is a change to a requirement it seems to draw out "I've just heard this ...." posts about someone second/third hand.

Re: Expats stranded in Turkey

The new Residency criteria was announced 1 year before inception. Surely in that time the Turkish authorities could have been geared up and had everything in place for April this year. I know there were local elections prior to the new rules but they were aware of this. Much as I love Turkey there are some things that really rankle and their inefficiency and failure to "sing from the same hymn sheet" in each area beggars belief.

To be unable to leave the country is just unacceptable. An impending death in my family would definitely be an emergency.

Re: Expats stranded in Turkey

Previously İ applied for my İkamet renewal three days later Mum went into hospital, İ went to the police station and they gave me a paper İ used that to leave and return without problems and as İ have booked a flight for end of July may find myself in the same situation again.

Never said yours was but why not say you knew her initially . There are too many gremlins who like to milk a situation with second hand stories which detract from the really sad true cases such as the person that you know

Sounds a bit like the UK Passport Offices.

Re: Expats stranded in Turkey

İ took two passports back to post 20th May posted then 9.05 - 21st and the passport office denied they had been received until we produced the certificate of posting then said they arrived three weeks after the date of posting İ contacted the post office tracking site - they were signed for the day following my posting eg 22nd May they are still not processed. İ was so happy İ paid for priority posting and tracking as they were for a friend.

However when İ previously needed to leave urgently after re-applying for my ikamet İ found the Polis very helpful have applied for the new İkamet and been told if it doesn't arrive by the 20th July İ have tickets for the 27th go and see them and they will give me a paper to let me leave and return without problems.

The only time İ had a problem was some years ago when İ was issued with a new chip and pin passport by Ankara and they didn't enter it on the system - many phone calls by the airport police and the removal of my luggage from the plane and it was sorted. İ was then escorted to the plane with my luggage and felt like a VİP however sure some passengers thought İ was a terrorist.
