Re: Turkish citizenship

Contact your local nufus - by that İ mean the nufus at the nearest admistrative centre eg for Alanya it's Antalya. The documents needed are quite extensive and you have to have some of the Uk ones translated and authorised by the Consul/embassy. Not sure if you can do this in Antalya as the consul has retired and no-one seems sure if she will be replaced.. Also like so much there are regional differences so any list provided would not be relevant to all areas and as April 2014 so much has changed. Also when İ applied the forms you need could only be obtained at the regional nufus office in person. Forgot to add if you are married they insist your husband attends with you certainly in Antalya.

Yes my husband went Alanya nufus ofis today and he was told to go to Antalya. Just wanted to have as many of the documents ready.

Thanks, Lynda

Re: Turkish citizenship

Contact the consul first as that is the most difficult one the translation and authorisation of your birth cert. The process if very lengthy now as they do interpol checks etc. Not sure İ would bother if İ was starting again.

Re: Turkish citizenship

Our initial application for Nationality some seven years ago began at the Nüfus ve Vatandaşlık Genel Müdürlüğü in İzmir and we came away with a brochure listing the many and varied requirement to be fulfilled. This included, but is in no way comprehensive::

- two fairly informal tests in the Turkish language here in Çeşme followed by one much more formal ones in front of about ten extremely well-dressed or uniformed members of a panel at the Nüfus office which we passed – amazingly!

- a clean bill of health required from six clinics in the local hospital, involving blood tests, x-ray and medical examinations, including Psychiatry (that was a close call!),

- completion and photocopies of countless documents

- and even had our fingerprints taken. What could be next?

'Next’ was totally unexpected, the result of the goalposts being moved presumably! We had a visit from the Jandarma. The Commander, no less, arrived at our home (with the customary guard of two fresh-faced young soldier boys armed with semi-automatics) requesting our presence at Security Headquarters (Foreigner’s Department) together with our current and expired passports. The mind boggled.

You have to have had residency for five years before you can apply for Nationality. . Fair enough. We had held Residence Permits for nine years, but apparently, we were told, you now cannot be out of Turkey for more than six months in those five years.

‘What?’ ‘You cannot be serious?’ That wasn’t in the printed list of requirements’. “Well”, was the helpful rely, “You can apply again if you wish.” I don’t think so! The process took almost 12 months/

These experiences are, of course, out-dated and may well only apply in the İzmir region but it remains a cautionary tale!

It now appears applications for Residency are now becoming a close second in terms of bureaucratic difficulties and delays.
