Residence Permit

Sorry probably been asked before. I am 68 my Residence permit expires 1/10/2014, can anybody confirm i do not need medical insurance because of my age to reapply for residence permit. I have heard a lady in Antalya was told she had to have medical insurance and she was over 65 which i am led to believe you do not need medical insurance.

Re: Residence Permit

You might not need it for renewing your residence permit, but take my advice and get some. Apart from the odd cold I have never had an illness, I am fit and healthy. However, my husband insisted that we take out the SGK. I grumbled about it being a waste of money and didn't want to take it because "I never get anything wrong with me". However, I went along with it and passed the medical, paid my first premium and just as the second premium became due I started getting pains in my upper arms (left one first then both) when walking my dog. Just a stroll, not a fast walk. Then came the pains in the chest and throat. Upshot is that I have had to have a stent fitted into my heart to relieve the blocked arteries. I could not have afforded the treatment without the insurance. (One hospital wanted to charge me 3,000 lira for an angiogram and between 5,000 and 6,000 for a stent and that was with the SGK). Would I have been able to get back to the UK and have treatment in time? Anybody's guess.

Re: Residence Permit

I whole-heartedly agree with Harem; don't stay or live in Turkey without some health insurance unless you have VERY deep pockets and are happy to pay the inevitably inflated bills.
Based upon my own recent experience I am eternally grateful to have had cover with Staysure for 6 months in Turkey at the cost of 135. It has covered all my bills for a detached retina operation in a top Izmir hospital, which would otherwise have been at least €5000. They also took over all the arrangements for the op and treatment, which would have been another source of stress at a difficult time without help. Without an urgent operation I could have lost my sight but am now on the long road to recovery.
Being normally a healthy person with no previous medical problems this is the last thing that I would have expected to happen to me, and it just shows how life is what happens while you are making other plans.
Don't risk it, if not for your own sake, at least give your family some peace of mind!
