read through the posts regarding this, but don't think my question has been clearly answered anywhere so hope someone can assist please;
My wife and I may come to live in Altinkum in about a years time, so I understand we need to apply for a residence permit once we are there, I presume we can do this once we've entered on a tourist visa?
A lot of posts seem to suggest that a work permit can be applied for whilst in Turkey by your prospective employer, but I've also read that it has to be applied for some time before you arrive in Turkey. Please can you tell me which one is correct?

residence permit can take as long as 8 weeks or as short as 3 days depending on how, where and when you apply for it.
Work permit takes longer and it is best to get a residence first before applying to save going back to UK or where ever you was last resident to pick up the visa.
Work permit can take between 3 weeks to 12 months depending on the paperwork and which position you apply for.

been here 4 years now and dont know any one who has a work permit
as far as i know you cant get them prob only if you are a doc or teacher

work permit issue a big one, in that lots of british folk are working illegally here with no permits, fair enough to say everyone does it but im sure a time will come when this is seriously acted on(i hope anyway, as im sure that if the role were reversed and this was happening with foreigners in our own hometowns in britain, we as a general rule would have a lot to say about it!).
the application for work permit is lengthy and 4 copies of all the paperwork needed and person applying must have diploma/degree of some nature. Employer fills in certain parts of the form and submits a petition explaining why the person applying is being prefered for the post.
work permit applications appear to vary region to region as regards actually obtaining one and the time scale involved.

You mean it doesn't happen in UK.............................wow, and there was me thinking all the illegal immigrants were working legitimately and for the minimum wage.

This whole issue with the wok permit is a dilemma.
When I first came back to Turkey after being married to my turkish husband for 18 yrs, I was not too hppy to find out that I coulnt just walts out and get a job and work legally, as he was able to the minute he came to the states....
I had to get my turkish citizenship (whereas he didnt have to get his US itizneship right away to be able to work) and if you look at the itizenship laws here, you have to be married for a certain time before you can apply and also living in the country for a certain amount of years before you can apply, and no laws for the interim time. I was lucky in that i was able to slash the time factor before I was eligible for citizenship in two ways, one I was born here, and two I was married to a Turkish citizen, and i had spent over 20 yrs in turkey it dint take me very long at all to get it, but my point is that, in the my country, you are given the creen card the minute you marry and are allowed to work right away, here you have to wait for your citizenship to come thru, what if you needed the income you generate to live>? no thought to that....
and I remember all the turks living in the states working illegally (not to mention the other million or two illegals..........but for some reason, i just couldnt bring myself to do that.

anyway, Starman's advice is always right on, so heed his advice.

The work permit issue is such a pain!

I think the law of having to be married a length of time is a bit of a problem.
As Pebble says what if you need the income? I have been married for 2 years and lived in Turkey for nearly 3 years but I still have to wait another year for my citizenship and then prove that I meet the criteria. However, I expect that between now and that time the law will change again!

I have a Turkish friend who stayed in the US got his greencard when he got married and that was fine, he worked right away! Unbelievable really!!!

I got a work permit and most of my friends have one too. There are 10s of thousands of people with them and they are not doctors or teachers.
But then again I dont know of any doctors here that are foreign.

i actually said that if it were happening in our own hometowns in britain we would have plenty to say about it, meaning that we would (hopefully) not be in agreement with illegal working, therefore i personally dont agree with it in this country either. That doesnt mean to say i agree with the system but i certainly dont agree with illegal working in any country and feel it should be addressed appropriately.Apologies if i didnt post clearly in the original.
