Retirement Permit
We are moving to Datca early next year, we will have sold our property in the UK so leaving nothing of value here. We are retiring early 52 & 55 so will not be claiming a pension yet. I have seen something about retirement Permits, are these the same as residancy permits/visas or a different thing altogether, also as we will have nothing left in the UK apart from children, will we pay tax in Turkey, we will be (hopefully) living off the interest earned from savings, albeit it wont be a massive amount. Any info would be gratefully received

Re: Retirement Permit
Hi Carol and Rob. We did the same as you are planning and about the same age level.I have never heard of a Retirement Permit nor have ever been asked for one. This was two years ago so maybe new rules have come into force ' but I doubt it.

Re: Retirement Permit
Thanks Ian, did you just get a residence visa then, I hear they are very expensive, a large expense when we will not have an income as such. Do you work or are you doing the same as us and living off savings

Re: Retirement Permit
Hi Carol & Rob. yes ,got a residence permit for five years at a cost of 1860 YTL. Today it will cost you 2270 YTL for five years. Not a chance of either of us working again and we both have a small private pension each. These along with our investments in Turkey allow us to do more or less what we please. ( within reason.)
I think that most members would agree that you can have a good life in Turkey if you do not go stupid.

Re: Retirement Permit
The way things are going in the UK its more likely you'll need a retirement permit there Carole and Rob!! It is becoming more expensive here, but if you both have pensions, as Ian says, you should be ok. Clothes and food tend to be cheaper in the UK though - unless you are a vegetarian!! Good luck!!

Re: Retirement Permit
I find it strange that you say food and clothes are cheaper in UK. It's probably easier to clothe myself in UK and much more choice, , but cheaper to kit out huband and kids in Turkey also my Migros bills are a lot less than my UK tesco ones even with a few meals out we spend less a week eating than we do in UK.

Re: Retirement Permit
I suppose I just have to kit out me!! There's so many factory retail outlets near my mum I can get clothes far cheaper there. As for food, there are all those 2 for the price of one offers in the UK which you don't get here. Plus vodka is cheaper in the UK!!

Re: Retirement Permit
a woman after my own heart Freda, as long as the vodka is cheap then we should be ok!!, we will probably have about £400gbp a month to live on, no mortgage so just bills and food, is this amount about right or are we deluding ourselves!

Re: Retirement Permit
Carol and Rob.My opinion is that, unless you have some form of Investment from which you will be able to draw interest then 400 GBP's will not be enough.Maybe some of the other Members will be able to tell you differently.

Re: Retirement Permit
Hi !
I suppose it all depends on what kind of life style you intend to have here. £400 is a lot more than most turkish famlies have to live on and we are talking three or four children. I do not own my property here and my monthly expenses which include having ADSL and Digiturk, rent, gas, electric, water, council tax and food work out to around 8920 ytl or a lıttle over 3k a year. That includes one trip back to the uk.I eat out about twice a month and use publıc transport a lot. You are going to have to take into consideration the cost of heating for the winter in your calculations.
There are lots of ways to save money and one of them is to grow your own vegetables or even try your hand at keeping chickens ..... I do not know you or your lifestyle and back to basics suits me very well. I do not miss going to the cinema or meeting up for a pint in the pub, but some people would and do. There are other forms of entertainment here i.e playing Okey or backgammon, picnics, fishing, pool where you only pay for the tea you drink....simply visiting your turkish neighbours to drink tea and knit or crochet
One thing to remember is that when you move here you will suddenly be contacted by the kids and thier friends, old neighbours, great auntie mildred and people you havn't seen for years. It is wonderful but apart from my kids who I don't mind feeding and housing for free, the rest of them try and do take advantage. They all want a free holiday at your expense!
Please don't be put off by making the move but consider all your options. Yes, I came out here with a lot more money, was taken for a bloody long ride and have to pay the consequences. Things are tight but nothing on earth would possess me to throw in the towel and head back to the UK and it won't even be over my dead body........
