Kimlik for a Foreign Wife
Hi everyone.
This is a question that I am hoping someone will be able to answer!
I have been married to my Turkish hubby for nearly two years and been living here constantly for 2 and a half years.
I keep hearing different stories with regards to be getting dual nationality. I know the law changed about this before we got married in 2004.
However, nobody really has a definate answer for the process.
Can anybody help me?

Re: Kimlik for a Foreign Wife
Debbie, when you married did you register your marriage at the Nüfüs office?
I am assuming you have because otherwise your husband would have his old Nüfüs/Kimlik card saying he is single. You have to wait until you have been married 3 years then you can apply for a Kimlik card. Once you have been married 3 years you file out the forms at the Nüfüs office and they will give you a number. With this number you can look up on their website to see the status of your application. Their website is: www.nvi.gov.tr

Re: Kimlik for a Foreign Wife
To get the best advise on this as the law has change i suggest you contact the British Embassy as they will or should have all the details of English nationals married in Turkey and obviously the answers to obtaining dual nationality, i do remember when i last spoke to the Embassy in Antalya that now if British national marries a turk it does not give them automatic access to the uk as it did before, so the doors have been closed on the ones wanting marriage to gain access.
Some info from their web site can be found HERE

Re: Kimlik for a Foreign Wife
Just looked at the Nufus website - there was a contact number so my husband called it.
After 3 years I can apply for my kimlik.

Hi Dawn
Go to your nearest Nufus Dairesi with your hubby and they should be able to tell you what the current laws are.

Re: Kimlik for a Foreign Wife
When we got married 5 years ago the law had just changed and I was not entitled to a Kimlik. We were told that after 3 years you apply for a Turkish Passport - not a Kimlik. I haven't bothered because of the language requirement.

The language part was not hard, just a few basics, I passed and my Turkish is shameful... You do get a kimlik, but as Alison said on another thread you don't need to get a Turkish passport as your British one and kimlik is enough to get in and out of the country.
