Post Citizenship by marriage

I know there are a few of us on here married to Turks since 2003 when the laws regarding citizenship changed, so i thought i would record the process here as i've just started the ball rolling. Not much to tell at the moment but i will add to it as and when - hope it helps someone.

First of all we went to the Nufus office in Fethiye, told them what we wanted and they gave us a list of things we need and told us what we need to do with them.

On the list is 4 photos, my passport and birth certificate both translated and notorised at the office in Fethiye & photocopies of the originals, my residence permit, the paper version of our marriage document (not the book...the printed version obtainable from the registrar if you don't have one), and the paper version of Hubby's ID card, also available from the Nufus office.
It cost approx 150YTL at the notory for the bits we had done.

We then had to take all this to our Governorship (sp), which for Fethiye as we know is Mugla. Once at the nufus office we handed over all the papers, and were asked to fill out a form with a summary of all my details (name/dob/place of birth/religion/address in Turkey/phone nos/parents names & address etc) I was also asked "Do you want to keep your name or take a Turkish name?" (first name), i opted to keep my own. And was asked to give the names, addresses and telephone numbers of two Turkish people NOT family who could act as references. My residence permit and passport were given a thorough once over, and then photocopies were taken of all the documents to make up 3 dossiers all containing the same thing. We paid 30YTL for this. We were then told that we would be contacted in approx 2-3 months to be asked to attend an interview and language test (best book some more lesson sharpish ), but that even if that went well it would be 8 months before the whole process would finish and citizenship granted.

Many people seem to worry about the language test....and now i see why. I don't speak 'great' Turkish but i can usually get by, and even if i can't get the words out my own mouth very quickly, i usually understand pretty much most of what is said to me. But whether i was nervous or what, i went to pot in that office and struggled to answer the couple of questions that were directed at me (rather than Hubby...which most were). The woman we saw even commented to Orkut "she doesn't speak much" (i of course understood this far more accurately than anything else she said )......which i took as a bad sign as far as the test goes. I think the leap between what i usually hear & speak, ie very informal and quite 'villagey' Turkish and the very formal Turkish i was hearing there showed a drastic gap in my Turkish skills and i will definately be trying to get some lessons in before the interview! Wish me luck!

Karen

Best of British Karen - my experience of the language test was a bad one but others seem to sail through it. It really is just one of those things. I had a hard time and faced a very stern government official who seemed to be having a bad day - however a man from my village was only asked 3 simple questions - whats your name, where are you from and do you speak Turkish? Perhaps the fact he worked for the British government at the embassy previously with his Turkish wife (a fluent interpreter) had something to do with it. That's Turkey

Probably because the subject has been flogged to death in My Merhaba forum and people tend to get rather excited about it

Incidentally it was on that forum I posted my experience of the language test and an interesting debate sprouted.

Sue - We originally started the ball rolling April and ended up at Mugla to submit the paperwork and go through details. Went back to Mugla for the language test (August I think without checking my diary) and now we await news! The process was very like all processes in Turkey - backwards and forwards, endless forms, stamping, photo-copying, passport photos, interviews, and the usual total confusion LOL. The most fun was getting my fingerprints done at Konacik jandarma and trying to not look guilty

Re: Citizenship by marriage

it is not just national service. There is the issue of when I have kids. If I take turkish citizenship then my kids would have to go into the state education system and that is one thing i feel strongly about and would not subject to them. If I stayed away from this TC stuff then at least my kids could get a chance in an international school on the IB programe or else its ofski to educate them some where else.
