Carrying identification

Hi,
Can anyone tell me if the new law about carrying I.d. is being strictly enforced? Has anyone had any experience of how it is operating. What happens if you don't have id? Will be in Bodrum area
Just a bit concerned about carrying the whole families passport about with me.
Thanks
Sasha

Re: Carrying identification

You will be fined 120 TL if you don't carry the originals of the passports with you. Yes - it is strictly enforced now -

''What happens if you don't have id?''
How did they get into the country?
The law has always stated that PASSPORTS should be carried by all foreigners and ID cards by Turkish citizens, just because it was never enforced on foreigners in the past is no reason to question why it should not be enforced either now or in the future.

As a foreigner in Turkey we have to carry our original passport document and a copy of your Visa.

We are guests in their country and if we do not want to abide by their laws then we should not be there.

Is it being enforced, sorry but no idea and tbh since it was bought to light I have not heard or read of anyone coming a cropper for not carrying their documents.

Sorry if it sounds harsh, but that's the way it is.

Re: Carrying identification

I was on a Pamukkale coach travelling from Soke to Bodrum on Tuesday, the coach was stopped near Bafa Lake, Police and Jandarma boarded the coach and took every ID card from the Turkish passengers, the policeman got on his phone and relayed the ID number on every card to whoever he was talking to,
after a 20 min delay we were set on our way again.

I showed the Jandarma officer my residency card but he didnt seem to know what it was so I had to show my passport

Re: Carrying identification

We always carry copies of our passports and keep the originals in the safe. Will have to take the originals now, I guess. Just hope we don't get robbed or leave our bags unattended. It has happened to people we know. What a carry-on to replace them too !

Re: Carrying identification

Would a notarised copy of a passport be acceptable?

Now that's a good idea Jaycey. Maybe a bit too easy and sensible, I think.

Re: Carrying identification

Sorry I did not make myself clear,I meant what happens if you don't have id with you if you get stopped. I have no problem carrying ID and have always carried drivers license (photographic one) and this has always been accepted.
Did not know that you have always needed To carry your passport nor that you should now also carry your visa.
Over the last few years have not been asked for copy of visa at airport I assume because it is in the system but have not been to Turkey since the recent changes.
Will need to find some way of carrying 3 children's and 2 adults passports and visas safely.
