54 UK Freeview channels in Turkey, and it does work.

Hi Guys,

Just to let you know I have just completed 2 weeks of watching 54 UK freeview channels, and it works very well.

The solution has previously been mentioned and more details can be found here Slingbox.

I waited a couple of weeks to makesure I wasnt recomending a dead duck but here is my mini review.

In Brief only try this if you have a competent computer geek in the U.K. to set this up, things that you need to mention are "Port Forward", "Upnp", "Router configuration" if they look blank then dont bother..... They also need to allow you to use at least 300k of their upload speed of their Broadband connection.

Basically there is a little box that you need to plug into your router and an airiel, then you configure the router (which if yours is one of the recommended ones then it will do it automatically). This box costs you £180 so its not cheap but sooo worth it I reckon.

I get 54 UK Freeview channels that I can switch over at my leisure and although most of these channels are rubbish, we have still appriciated them greatly.

Problems
If the signal strength of the airiel drops and the box no longer receives enough of a signal to display a channel then sometimes the box will freeze, it took me a week to sus this out but once I realised the problem it is easy to work around as you tend to know which channels drop our (not the main ones thankfully).

Turkey Internet connection can sometimes be alot to be desired, this is a rare occurance here in Akbuk but it has happened where the download speed has dropped to just 110kb but even at this low level I have been able to watch the telly with perfect sound and a dodgy picture.

Overall
I would definitely recommend it, i normally get about 250-300kb download speed and the quality at this speed is excellent when linked up to the TV through the Laptop. Its nice to catch some of the old favorites and its nice not to have to pay a re-occuring fee every month.

Alternative
You could try Liveuktv this is a paid service for £25/month and it only gives you BBC1, BBC2 ITV and Channel4. I was going to go for this before i found the Slingbox solution.

I am now looking forward to not having to go into Altinkum to watch the Rugby 6 Nations in February.

Take care

Marc

yes you are missing something , for those that have broadband in turkey, this slingbox is an option to watch, what you call 54 rubbish channels, but if you have sky in the uk and broadband in noth the uk and turkey, you can also watch sky which would be far better than having a 3 or 5 metre dish plonked on your property and whatever the subscription would be?

Speedy,
If you re-read the review, you'll see that it was the reviewer who said that the majority of channels are rubbish, not me.

"I get 54 UK Freeview channels that I can switch over at my leisure and although most of these channels are rubbish, we have still appriciated them greatly."

I wouldn't have thought the deal was so bad otherwise.

Apologies for that I guess what people are trying to say that the slingbox can control your uk satellite channels from your place in turkey if you have a reasonable broadband connection even changing the channels

Hi,

The sling box can be used in 2 modes,

in Relay mode
1stly if connected properly it can replicate all the TV Channels you have in the UK, that includes; Sky, Cable or Freeview. in this mode as you change channels in the UK then they will also change in Turkey and Visaversa

in Freeview mode
It has a built in Digital decoder and so you have full control of the channels, and do not effect anyone watching elsewhere. This is the mode I use.

"54 Mostly Rubbish Channels" - here's a list you can decide for yourself as I said I wouldnt be without it as for me there are about 8 great channels some of which I couldnt even get if I had a 5m dish in Turkey (BBC2 for instance)

Note: it changes dependent on location and signal strength http://www.freeview.co.uk/channels/?lv[0]=channels

Sounds like a good option for those that come on holiday here but what about or those that live here? What I mean is for those of us that dont have any where to place a slingbox in the UK.

just looked at the channels list and most I have never heard of and since when has there been a bbc 3?
