Sky Boxes

Hi

Can anyone advise?

In readiness for my imminent move to Turgutreis I have cancelled my Sky subscription and they have told me I can keep the Syk Boxes and viewing cards (one is Sky and the other is Sky Plus).

Are they of any use to me in Turkey and, if so, can I just stick them in my suitcase - do I need to declare at customs or pay bandroll tax etc?

I guess if they are useful then I will have a spare - so if anyone wants one ......

Regards

Not too sure they are much good in Turkey Helen,
what i would do is sell them in the UK and buy new
in Turkey. They are more likely to be cheaper in
Turkey and if they do go wrong then the Turkish
engineers know what they are up against.

Hmmmm

Thought that was the case - anyway I think I will just sign up for that Live UK TV thingy http://www.liveuktv.com/ - you can get BBC1, BBC2, ITV, Channel 4 and a couple of other channels for either £20 or £25 a month.

You can tell I have researched thoroughly!

Re: Sky Boxes

Morning Helen,

Just to let you know that there is also another option for you here. It's called a 'Slingbox'. You connect it up to a dish in the UK, say a family member which has Sky and you can view it over the internet. There is NO monthly payment and you only need a Freesat card in the Sky box which is free. I have one and it works fine. I am sending pictures to the Canary Island of Lanzarote with no problems at all with a 1 meg b/band connection there and a 2 meg here. You can receive Sky in Turkey but as already said, you will need a 3 metre dish to pick up the signal as Turkey is in a fringe reception area. Have look at all options first. Hope that helps.

Re: Sky Boxes

I realise you need a really big dish to receive Sky in Turkey but how simple is it to purchase a viewing card and digi box? When I enquired at Sky a couple of years ago they were adamant that it could not be done- it was illegal. Have things changed since then?

Re: Sky Boxes

Yes, as long as you are using the "freeview" part of the sling box (which is built in) and not using the remote control option which will actually control a sky box or similar but will also change the channels for the viewer in the UK. you can get around this if you are prepared to pay for multiroom.

You do need to know someone with technical knowledge of computers etc to get this up and running as you need to do some alterations to your adsl router. It s also possible to give the slingbox support people access to do this for you but, i'd recommend having someone with a little IT knowledge.

I have been using this for the last 6 months now and would not be without it. The quality is similar to watching a VHS Tape which may sound bad but its really watcheable when you think of the alternatives.

Take care

Re: Sky Boxes

i have 2 sat systems at my place at gumusluk. i have the free 1 which only gets you 1 brit stn and about 400 foreign. which is basically useless, and i have the digi turk 1 that costs about 18 ytl a month ,that gets me a few englich speaking stns, and you can suspend it for 2 months at atime so it dont even cost 18 ytl if you are not there.
