Satellite TV

Just bought a 20" TV with satellite receiver built-in, dish, installed and fitted for £380, included was a card to unlock a few of encrypted channels.

Had to go through about 300 channels find and block the X rated ones, had kids staying there, and didn't want them channel surfing

Not many English channels, but plenty of European and Arabic ones.

Sandra,

I bought the TV from Kartel, they are near Gima, going towards beach. They also supplied the card.
Although they got that from someone else.

I got the number of a satellite guy there who does all this stuff and install the dishes (in my Turkish sim, can email it if you want it)

I'm afraid I'm a little ignorant on the subject of Sky Boxes but wondered if anyone could help?

A friend of mine in Turkey has asked friends to bring a box from the UK. This has been done i.e. someone with Sky already has purchased an additional box. However, he had a problem with the installation of the new box and had to contact Sky. They told him the following, which has paniced him:

A technician at the fault line contact asked my fiend to carry out some fault finding checks and was told that these boxes send messages back to the mainframe at night to confirm they are still connected if they show they aren't they generate a breach of contract letter

My friend is panicing now as he thinks it carries a hefty fine?

If anyone with any experience of this can help, it would be much appreciated.

The only way the boxes can send a signal back is if the the phone line coming out of the box is connected to the telephone socket.

The box is a receiver only, so no need to panic.

As part of your contract with Sky Digital you are required to keep your sky box connected to the telephone line you have registered with them. They simply send a pulse down the telephone line to their modem which is inside the box, of course if the telephone line is not connected then they can detect this. I think they do this check only randomly.

I have to unplug my sky connection from the phone all the time, about 3 or 4 times a year I get a letter saying I have broken the terms of the contract but the only thing they threaten is to stop the discount I get for my multi room connection and threaten me with having to pay full price for the second box. They normally harp on about all of the things I can miss out on by not having my sky box connected, all of these things would of course cost me even more money !

Don't loose sleep over this

I have had a sky box for a few years, and never connected it to the phone line, and not had any problems.

Mushtaq, you may have a sky analogue box which does not require a telephone connection, it's the new digital service which does.
