Re: Vehicle Registration Plates

Are you sure about the military plates ?

All the Jandarma, Coast Guard and Naval vehicles I've seen around here have black lettering on a white plate.

The plates consist of 7 or 8 numbers. The first number designates the branch of the military. In the case of the Jandarma it's 7. The second and third numbers are for the province, in Mugla's case 48. The rest of the number, I assume, is the vehicle's ID within the military unit.

High ranking Belediye officials have Red lettering on a White background i.e. Mayors

Less important officials and Muhtars generally have vehicles with White lettering on a Black background.

Provincial officials have Gold lettering on a Black background i.e. The Governor of a province.

Re: Vehicle Registration Plates

I'll try to include this picture of a military plate from Wikipedia which shows white lettering on black background but I don't think it will work.

34 NM 240
  • Military
However, Wikipedia then goes on to say "999999 (black on a white rectangle of 7x20cm on the bumper of the vehicle, painted by a stencil). 100999 Army, 300999 Air Force, 500999 Navy, 700999 Gendarmerie"

Confusing but you live there and have seen them so I would go with you.

No it didn't work

Re: Vehicle Registration Plates

You have to remember Craig that a) things change and the info isn't updated and b) Wikipedia is written in the most part by the general public c) some of the sources of info are very dubious.

I think the writer has probably confused military plates with Local Government, Polis and Zabita ones. They are generally White lettering on a Black background.

Oh yes I'm aware of that - it's not the first time I've been 'wikified' heheh

An interesting little aside is that apparently Turkish soldiers use the car registration system to count down their days left of military service.

In other words when they have 81 days left to go, they refer to it as being in Duzce as that is number 81 on the list. They must be in heaven when they're in Adana!!

Now I didn't get that from Wikipedia!!

Re: Vehicle Registration Plates

We've been told that the Trafik Jandarma also play Car Snooker just like the Brit Cops !
