Re: Red Backed Shrike

A beautiful photo of this wonderful bird.l have seen many of these where l live.
Correct me if l am wrong.
This one is the female with a slightly scaly grayish buff-underside.The male has a black mask, white throat and the back is like a reddy type brown coloring. The species similar to the redback is the penduline Tit.This is one bird l would love to see in his nest with his fledgelings
Sad to say. These wonderful birds have diminished from the UK countryside.
l'll try and take a photo of the woodchat shrike[l haven't the expertise like you v6cod.But all l can do is try].They are always perching on my dog kennels fencing. And would you believe this lovely bird is similar to the magpie species.l suppose it has something to do with the bird having a slightly hooked bill that feeds on small rodents frogs and lizards. They even catch small birds.

Re: Red Backed Shrike

Yes this is the female, the male indeed does have a black mask etc and it also has a grey head. It is on the Red List in the Uk as it has diminsihed as a breeding species there and only the odd ones are seen during migration.

I am posting another thread of a penduline tit and nest on a seperate thread.

Re: Red Backed Shrike

Just this morning while on my computer in the caraven.l saw this stocky little bird which l think is a juvenile woodchat shrike. He was in the ideal position lookin at me.And just as l took the snap,he turned away from me.
l wonder if v6cod can identify this chunky bird just by his back.
This was the best l could do.

Re: Red Backed Shrike

Although it is difficult from the photo due to the amount of twigs etc I don't think it is a juvenile WS the colour is too uniform across the back there should be some buff/white showing on it's scapulars and I can see no evidence of it here. However that is not definate due to the twigs etc.

Here is a photo of a juvenile (not mine)

where you see it is not a uniform brown back.

Re: Red Backed Shrike

l don't think this one is a juvinile woodchat. But more of a female red back[l think]
l'm chuffed with this one because of the details are more clearer then the last one. l was waiting for a shrike to land near by to take the shot. But!,it is the male woodchat l'm after.
