Encounter with birds of prey

I had a fabulous 3 hours working various birds of prey in Cheshire today. Loved every minute of it. Here are some pics and vids....

Re: Encounter with birds of prey

Oh magical.!! I have flown barn owls but nothing bigger. When I was younger, much younger it was always my dream to have a Harris Hawk. Philip Glasier, a big name in falconry was one of the 1st to fly them. They were generally thought to be unsuitable, but turn out to be brilliant at it.

Well done you!! from an envious me!

Brilliant photos! Did you do one of those experience days out? I saw an afternoon with birds of prey advertised at Warwick Castle and wondered if it would be fun.

Wish they would train the bloody seagulls to all fly away and never come back here!!! In all fairness they not been too bad lately BUT I think I will go away for the whole of next years baby hatching time, they were unbearably noisy and messy....love the birds of prey vids though.

Yes it was something that Denise booked as a surprise for me. (See link below). I did the "Meet the birds" experience, but now I want to go back and do the "Walk on the wildside" one.

Falconry, Birds of Prey Centre

It really was a special 3 hours. I said to Denise when we were driving home that I felt like I was on a come down! .. Just brilliant to just see these birds close up, and to see them swoop to your hand is amazing. And the guide was incredibly knowledgeable. You learn so much about the birds.

Oh Andrew & Mary, apparently the Harris Hawk is now THE bird to have amongst Falconers.

Re: Encounter with birds of prey

Is it an old wives tale or can owls actually turn their head to look 360 degrees?

lt is kinda true Phill. But obviously this old wife didn't know her maths properly.

An owl can turn it's head aprox.280 degrees. This give the illusion of the head turning a 360% when rotating quickly and then back again. The reason why the owl has this such unique skill is due to the many vertebrae bones they have in their neck. They can even turn their head horizontal and beyond that sometimes.
The owls eyes are fixed in one place and do not rotate like the human eye.So they use their necks to counter act that.
Most birds of prey have this ability to rotate the neck to 280 degrees.Watch the eagle.lt is amazing the way they turn their neck.

l sometimes wish l could turn my neck at 280 degrees so l see who is talking behind my back
