stowaway

I found this in my (Ankara) garden the other day. I think it must have stowed away in my kayak on a recent trip to Orhaniye.IMG_1074.1.jpg

A Praying Mantis. There's also an atheist variety that doesn't say it's prayers.

And they're harmless (to humans)

Re: stowaway

Hi,
We had a bright green one on our terrace in Akbuk a couple of years ago and came face to face with a brown one while in a cafe in Icmeler market year before last.

I love the pics on here.

Just wish I was in the right place at the right time to see more of these things myself!!

Re: stowaway

You should get out into the fields and scrub more! There's an amazing variety of weird and wonderful bugs out there. Don't mess with the tortoises though. They're not very friendly.

Re: stowaway

Fantastic photography -just great to see this close up

have to say I haven't seen any in Altinkum (yet); but found the sight of thousands of large (dragonfly looking) bugs taking to the air on Sunday/Monday quite unnerving. A combination of their size (around 2" long) and the massive numbers made them a sight to see - but not to walk through as they were flying around five feet of the ground.
Linda was not happy at all.

Re: stowaway

Lots of these in the Denizkoy / Yesiltepe area. The Turks say they point the way to Mecca.

The females have a nasty habit of biting the males head off after mating and eating them (think of which...)

Have seen the first often in other species- don't really wish to see the second phase! Hope this will not catch on.

regards
