House Spiders UK

After reading the other Spider thread I thought I ask some advice, as we have loads of spiders in and around our house, mainly outside thankfully, when I find them in the house I usually pick them up and let them lose outside.

But I'm finding them on the car, in the porch, all around the garden, plenty in my grape vine etc etc.

They don't seem to be dangerous type, just loads of cobwebs and the odd spider wizzing around. I have seen some very long wires, it's amazing the reach these little buggers have.

What do I do with them, do I just let them get on with it, do I need to control them in anyway? As you can see I'm no wildlife expert so any advice on this matter?

Re: House Spiders UK

my mum puts conkers around her house as she says they deter spiders as they dont like them but im not sure if it is just an old wives tale or not, we have the big black ones in our house occasionally and they dont bother me so i leave them to it as i think that they get rid of any other undesirable bugs that are in the house, im not too keen on the hump back ones that always seem to have webs outside that you walk in to but as long as they stay outside i dont mind them

Re: House Spiders UK

It is that time of year when they will start to come inside the house too!!!. I don't mind them as they kill other bugs, but now I have developed this fear, I am not so sure what I will do this year when they start to come inside for a warm corner for their winter.

Re: House Spiders UK

This is the season for the house spider, the damp brings them in.
I hate them, I had a bad experience in the Maldives when a cockroach fell from the rafters in the restaurant landed on my head and ran down my arm, needless to say the plate I was carrying went up in the air, I screamed cried and couldn't stop shaking and totally embarrassed myself.
I wasn't over fond of them before, but since that experience I have got a real phobia.
This time of year is a nightmare. I always check and shake my clothes, shake out my shoes in case one has crept in and check the bedroom and under the bed every night.

I have noticed a lot more this year and they are so big, they dont bother me unless they shoot across the floor at high speed and then you cant find it.

Re: House Spiders UK

I share my house with a few spiders and some other really hard backed bugs (but they don't live long), but as for the spiders, providing they keep to their side of the living room then we get on all-right, just wish they would stop demanding I turn the TV channel over, especially to the 'Natural Human World'

Re: House Spiders UK

The conker tale is true, pretty much. There is a chemical in conkers that the spiders don't like. However, I don't take any chances...I have a plug in spider deterrent and use a spray called spiderex which has the conker chemical

Actually sometime ago I did actually have a tine fly in my laptop screen and just had to wait for it to go away on it's own, fortunately it did disappear eventually.
