Hunting Laws

Does anyone know what the laws on hunting are in Turkey, i.e. how close to a residential area are hunters allowed, do they need a license (presume so) and at what age can they obtain a license?

No I'm not thinking of taking it up!!!

Re: Hunting Laws

There are plenty of laws regarding hunting in Turkey but of course, if you happen to be a Turkish hunter, you can just ignore them.

Re: Hunting Laws

As I found 5 spent cartridges on my terrace today, I don't think the law about shooting next to residential properties is much use.

Re: Hunting Laws

Officially you have to be 18 to have a gun license and you are supposed to be a minimum of 300 meters from any property. This info came from the State Officer of the Department of Environment and Forests in Koycegiz.

There is a booklet you can get from them that details all the hunting regulations and the protected species.

For info there are very few birds that can legally be shot at any time of year as Turkey signed up to the Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats, (a convention which aims to conserve wild fauna and flora and their natural habitats), in 1982 and it entered into force here in 1984.

Markie B, I don't know where you got your info from but you are supposed to have a licence according to the above department.

Re: Hunting Laws

I understand that you may own and use a single shot smoothbore weapon for hunting (including pistols, but not semi or fully automatic firearms) with a licence from the age of 21. Those responsible people I know in Turkey have such a licence and their storage premises are inspected.

Zaman carries news of changes: Interior Ministry to take charge of gun licenses for retired military personnel Having said that the law is much more observed in it's breaking than it's compliance.

Is that correct, or just local practice? We have a gun license for a shotgun and must pay about 800 lira per annum. Well, we haven't paid for about five years come to think of it. And contrary to some areas we've never had a police inspection. There's nothing to inspect really; you are allowed to defend yourself in case of burglary with menaces and you can't do that if it's locked in a cupboard. So, loaded and next to your bed is OK round my way. Burglars bring it on..

Be careful, we have a shotgun and have to have a licence. We have to renew it every few years. We're in the middle of this now, and the Jandarma is insisting that we bring the shotgun for him to inspect before he renews the licence. There's some other stuff, like getting a doctor to write that you are of sound mind, and they check whether you have had any criminal record since the last time you renewed it.
