Introducing a second dog

I am excitedly awaiting a new puppy on the Monday after I get back to the UK. I bought her from litter and she will be 13 weeks old when i take charge of her and she will be first in the house because Peachy has to do six days of quarantine cos my vet messed up.
I just wanted to ask the other dog owners, who have more than one dog, any tips for introducing a second dog. Peachy is a male toy poodle (neutered) and the new doggie is a female Yorkie. I think I am pretty well prepared in all ways and live in a house with a garden front and back and Richmond Park minutes away so it's doggie shangri-la. Also I will have lots of room in my upstairs flat since I will be only using it for storage and sleeping downstairs in my mum's flat after she comes out of hospital.

Re: Introducing a second dog

I'm surprised you are getting another pup, aren't you going to have your hands full looking after your mum without trying to get the new pup house trained at the same time?.

Best of luck anyway and hope it all goes well.

Re: Introducing a second dog

Well, it's not the best of timing but I bought her from litter when mum had come out of hospital after the rehabilitation centre and was in much better shape than she is now. I also bought my first dog in Turkey and had I known I would have had to leave and bring him back would have course not have bought him in the first place. We can't see into the future sadly.

Re: Introducing a second dog

Number one rule is not to fuss too much! Dogs have their own way of meeting and greeting and the best thing to do is pretty much ignore them and let them do it their own way.
First meeting is best outside in the garden with both dogs off leads (ensuring the garden is escape proof of course) don't leave them alone, but don't interfere unless one really goes for the other.
You have your work cut out with a puppy, get in plenty of toys - for BOTH dogs.
Good luck!

Re: Introducing a second dog

Thanks Pldouglas) The back garden is escape proof so I'll use that one
Lesley, yes I thought about that) He's used to lording it on his own and along comes a little Princess) He'll get used to it and love it I'm sure. The vet in Fethiye says he's having a lovely time with all the dogs and people fussing over him. He's had a very restricted life here where I can't walk him properly etc and he will I'm sure appreciate his new life.

Re: Introducing a second dog

I'm not an expert on dogs ... didnt go out to get one but Kara found us, but we had to introduce her to my sons 4 dogs. We took them all to a local park to get to know each other and then back in the house we made sure they all knew where their own toys and beds were. We were very carefull at feeding time but now they are all happy together. Good luck with the new puppy, can we have some photos soon of them both together. x x x

Re: Introducing a second dog

That's a real pack, Nanamo Yes, I've never tried to upload any photos to this forum but I guess I should stop being so technologically lazy and try to do that later or people will start to think I'm making these dogs up That's very helpful thanks
One of my Turkish friends here has a 12 year old Shi Tzu cross who was a rescue (when she was 4) and she then adopted a 10 year old rescue male terrier and just left them alone at home when she went out She came back to find the new dog gleefully humping her Shi Tzu! Well, luckily both dogs were neutered/spayed so no harm done but still....

How did the vet you had in Fethiye mess up? I would have thought your transport company( well known) would have picked up on any issue prior to Peachy leaving Turkey.

Re: Introducing a second dog

Phil, I live in Istanbul and the vet in Istanbul had to do the first part of the procedure ie the blood test. She put the blood in the fridge for a week before sending it to Ankara! Remember I live in Istanbul and not near the expat enclaves where vets have experience at this sort of thing. This vet doesn't speak a word of English either so that doesn't help. Anyway, it's too late to do anything about it now and I don't want to go over it all again and again and again. I've had an awful time generally trying to extricte myself from SGK, Digiturk, you name it. I'm just trying to stay (just about) sane and be glad I'm getting us both out of this place at whatever the cost. All I want to do now is to look forward.
