Owls

For the past 3 evenings in a row I have spotted Little Owls (Athene noctua) whilst walking the dog. I assume I am not spotting the same bird repeatedly as I have seen them in totally different areas of Dalyan

Just thought I would share!

It seems to be a bird week for me, a white stork flew over my head (close enough for me to make out individual feathers!); spotted a parent swift feeding a juvenile on a flat roof next to my balcony; chased by the neighbours guinea fowl (well the dog was chased) and spotted the extremely rare, and never noisey at 4 am, bleeding effing roosters!

Re: Owls

We've had a resident Little Owl in the Leylek/Gunluk complex for the last several years. Nice to see it too.

Re: Owls

I too have the occasional visit from Mr owl. Tonight however as I sit alone on my terrace I am serenaded by the distant sounds of tribal drums, barking dogs and speeding ambulances. Probably not the best backdrop but after six bottles of Tuborg......... who cares.

Re: Owls

The villa opposite us has had a family of those little owls for some years now. Sadly they are going to block their nesting place up, so they will have to move on. Will miss seeing them flying in & out. You wouldn't be allowed to do that in the UK.

To me some birds were a lot more interesting after a few bottles of Tuborg.

Re: Owls

I am in arikbasi Dalyan and have an owl that sits on my balcony roof.
Love seeing him/her.
Light browns and maybe about the size of a pigeon.

Re: Owls

Almost certainly a little owl as they make use of the shoddy build quality ie lots of gaps in the gable ends etc which provide excellent nest holes. In fact they are little bigger than starlings but because they are quite stocky look larger than they really are. I usd to live in Arıkbaşı and saw, and heard them(noisy little things!) frequently. The other small owl here is the scops owl. About the same size but has small 'ear' tufts and have longer wings. They are mostly insectivorous and hence migratory. You can sometimes see them flitting about in the town centre at night and they have a monotonous 'sip, sip' call.
