Spear fishing

A friend of mine wants to come over to do a spot of spear fishing next month and he was asking me what were the legalities or permits that were required to do so.
I told him that as far as I was concerned and what most locals do ...is just jump in and hunt away.. as no one will bother you.
He however is a bit more sensible than I, and wants to know what he has to do to be " legal"before entering the water.

Do any of u fine folk know what the regulations are?

martirkz will become famous soon enough
Re: Spear fishing

Best advice is for your friend to go with a boat that the captain has a "tourist fishing license" then he will be covered to fish the sea's including spear fishing. If he wants to go alone forget it, it's expensive to get an Amateur fishing license and takes weeks for the application to be processed. There are threads on this subject on this forum, enter "fishing" in the search box. Hope this helps.

As martirkz said, not a good idea. Turks MIGHT get away with stuff, but when a foreigner gets caught, the situation can get difficult. If you are speaking of the sea, note that the Sahil Guvenlik (Coast Guard) takes a strict attitude in the Kaş area if they catch unlicensed spear fishers. Even some of the dive boats will haul a fisher out and warn them not to come back. Watching, not killing, fish is the bread and butter of scuba divers and the coasteal waters are already fished too much.

Tell your friend to find a fresh fish at the local balikci and make a home-made spear, stick it through the fish, take a photo, then grill it.

Thanks ME......however I have been doing this for over 20 years and no one has ever bothered me ...though that could be because i am not very good.
Anyway my friend is a more upstanding fellow and will only do so if he has all the correct paper work.
Come to think about it.. he is a bit of a bore with his rules, regulations and high visibility jacket.... maybe I will tell him to go to Greece instead and not be annoying me!
