Kingfisher - Birds

Has anyone seen any kingfishers in Turkey as there seem to be 3 different species? Members of TLF excluded...

We have them on our river and reed beds. Not a bird man but they are as colourful as those in the UK

We saw one by our swimming pool in Kalkan a few years ago . Don't know what it hoped to catch.

Re: Kingfisher - Birds

We get them on the beaches here and they fish in the shallows. They often perch on the basket weave sunshades.
Beautiful birds.
I also remember watching kingfishers fishing in a river in France, maybe like here they didn't realise it's a republic!

Chinook, there are three species of kingfisher in Turkey. One is the "Common Kingfisher" (alcedo atthis) which is the same species as we get in the UK. That's the one you see along the Azmak. The other two look rather strange to British eyes (from photos, I haven't seen them in the real world). One is a river kingfisher - the Pied Kingfisher (black and white obviously); the other is a tree kingfisher - the White Throated Kingfisher - the colours of which are more familar, but not the beak (get one of these on your lemon tree and you are going to be a bit worried).

. . .

Tommie,

Koycegiz lake and town with the same name, are a twenty five minute run from Dalaman airport, you will also see kingfishers at Sultannia mud and sulphur spas or at any of the fish restaurants on the river that runs through and around Boyabasie, pardon spellings.
