Dishonest Insurers Beware
In Sept 07 my husband and I insured our house contents etc for the sum of 651ytl, unfortunately in Nov 07 we were burgled whilst asleep in bed. We proceeded with our claim through AK Sigorta, after having to obtain various reports for them and endless running around, we have learnt yesterday our claim has been refused. AK Sigortas assessor visited us on 26/11 as did the jandarma and both reports confirmed we had been burgled. A Turkish friend of ours rang AK Sigorta head office in Izmir yesterday on our behalf and found out the reason being we have no fer forje on our windows. They told him their agent in Yalkikavak should have informed us of this and also visited our property before taking our policy on HE DID NEITHER but Uzmir do not seem to be interested in their agents mishandling of this situatioin. So take heed and if you are insured and have no fer forje check with your insurers that you are covered as we now feel we have been robbed TWICE.

Re: Dishonest Insurers Beware
Sue,
Sorry to hear of your problems, I wish you well. personally I detest insurance companies, who always seem to find a way to obviate responsibility for a claim. Its a stark salutory lesson for all - check that small print. They are always qucik to take the money..... less willing to hand some back.
One of the worst examples I witnessed was a factory fire in Whitechapel. Three different Insurance loss adjusters ( read "claim reducers" ) where pestering the owner of the building. This was before all persons where out of the building and all the fire brigade arrived. Hate them.
Again, wish you well.

Re: Dishonest Insurers Beware
We were insured with AK Sigorta.
Not any more.
14 months ago there was a bad storm in Akbuk and our roof Peragola was blown off.
To cut a long story short, we were promised payment lots of times but are still waiting.
We ended up paying out of our own pocket, as it needed repairing quickly.
Since then, changed to Intasure Insurance (English Policy) hope this company is better...

Re: Dishonest Insurers Beware
we were asked in september when getting quotes
" how much glass" we had in the apt this was with basak sigorta
it seemed to be a mad question at the time i guess that they were questioning the larger windows.

Re: Dishonest Insurers Beware
Unfortunately I think all insurance companies try to get out of their responsability when it comes to a claim.
When we enquired for house insurance, our insurance company asked a hell of a lot of questions and finally wanted all invoices of whatever furniture we have at home... quite a lot, some coming from Belgium, obviously don't have all the paperwork left. The agent, who was truely doing his best to fill in the enquiry as complete as possible to avoid any claim refusals, said all insurers try to get rid of claims.
One of our friends had a car accident with our car a couple of months ago. The car was fully insured, and the damage pretty clear as well as the repair costs. Still we had to pay almost 1000 ytl out of our pocket, just because the insurer claimed the repairs couldn't cost as much as it did... Very funny, I would have told him to have the car repaired himself if he knew of a cheaper place, but my husband said it would do more bad than good. So we just settled for it, but I must say I am pretty disappointed in the Turkish insurance 'system'.
