Just Back From Yali

Hi all,
just back from 3 weeks in Yali (the first week it was colder than Sussex!) but glad to report that the roads are nearly re-surfaced and guess it can only be a matter of a couple of weeks before they are perfect - or Turkish perfect anyway!
We re-painted our entire 3 storey villa while we were there, using the traditional Turkish method of a ***** long pole working from the ground and then finishing off from the top - peice of cake! We are very impressed with the silicone paint we bought, it said it was waterproof on the tin and since it took 3 weeks of scrubbing our bodies to get the stuff off, then it clearly means what it sayes on the tin. Time will tell. anyway, it took us just 3 days to do the whole place PROPERLY and cost about £140 including the tools. We were pleased with our efforts until the roofers arrived and dragged the rolls of felt up the newly painted wall (okay we can fix that) then they managed to damage the water tank on the roof, which we couldn't fix but fortunatly Martin from Bodrum Garden Homes sailed to the rescue with a tub of fibre-glass and a lot of knowledge - result, fixed water tank. Thanks again Mart.
We then had our rear terrace glassed in and thought we had died and gone to heaven when the company we had chosen actually turned up with a spirit level AND USED IT!! They did a truly fantastic job ahead of time and with lots of smiles - they even used an ashtray outside and then emptied it when they had finished.
After that not a lot happened, we accidently 'rescued' the wrong dog (that really is a long story) rescued a tiny kitten which is now resident in our ground floor apartment and being tended to by a newly neutered Mum cat and severel human friends and neighbours. He has just about everything he needs except maybe Sky TV and should survive well until we return in 6 weeks. By the way, the vet in Yali neutered the mother cat for free because she was a stray, though a generous donation helps them to care for other animals.
Thanks to Sue and Ibrahim for a lovley lunch and to Gail and Martyn for saving the day once again.

Re: Just Back From Yali

What changes did you see in Yali from last year?

You seem pleased with the paint you bought, what was the make you used as it looks a decent price?

We're off there at the end of June for 3 weeks & will be doing a bit of painting ourselves, hence the question of what you used.

Re: Just Back From Yali

Not too many changes in Yali from when we were last there January 2008, certainly not as much building. The main change is the widening and re-surfacing of the 'top road' from Yali to Geris, also the lovley job they have made of the road past the posh fish resturants.
We can't remember the name of the paint, it was about 60 YTL for a 15 litre tub and seemed a mid-range price/brand. We got ours from the Yapi market next to the Dolmus station in the centre of Yali, they were really really helpful. It seems that exterior paint comes only in white (I'm probably going to be corrected on that) and that you buy a seperate tube of colour to add and mix if you want a pale cream as we did. Go very easy on the colour because it is a strong concentrate. Apparently you can get it mixed for you but at a cost, so we just bought a nappy bucket and tipped it back and forward until mixed. Easy.
When you first open your tub of paint you think you have got short measure because the tub is only two thirds full, but you can add up to 25% water. Now this is the thing, we did NOT add water to use the paint at its thickest for a problem wall that had penetrating damp problems. After that we only added about 10% water for use on all the other exterior walls.
Hope this gives others a few tips - good luck and don't forget to keep covered up because the stuff won't come off you - and hopefully not the walls either!
