Unhappy Hip Dysplasia in dogs-HELP PLEASE

I am devastated as my lovely spaniel Murphy ( who i rescued last August ) has been diagnosed with hip dysplacia

He has been limping for a while now and i thought maybe he had just sprained his leg !
I have been offered 2 alternative operations -

TPO - which is Triple Pelvic Osteotomy where they cut 3 parts of bone

OR THR - Total Hip Replacement - obvious what that is ! BUT VERY EXPENSIVE !

I dont know what to do ?
Has anyone elses dog been through this ?
Has anyone had any experience re this ?

Help and reassurance needed PLEASE

In the UK you'd be looking at at least £1,000 for the TPO operation with no guarantee of success.

Hi,
Yes we know about this condition too well. Our daughter has our dogs brother(Choc Labrador) and he has had it since he was 1 year old. He also has epilepsy.
For hip dysplasia he has had 3 operations so far, with some implants. He was ok for around 12 months, however today he has just gone for xray's as the condition has detoriated. We are all in petplan in the UK. He is now 3 years old.
So far the whole treatment has cost around £8,000 this xray this morning has cost £600.

He has had the TPO twice now and it has not cured it.

This dog is beautiful but needs constant attention, his condition is incurable and to be honest it is quite heartbreaking to see if you are an animal lover.
If this dog is not insured or anything like that, it will be a very costly affair I am afraid.

I am so sorry but we do know what it is like for you, I wish we could give you better news, but I am sorry in our experience we cannot. We wish you well and Murphy.

lt always saddens me when this type of degenerative genetic disorder, takes hold of a animal one dearly loves.
There's a link here that might help.

Hi,
An update not good news I am afraid, Milo our daughters dog is really quite bad and they are recommending he have a hip replacement now.

On a good note they have said that Hydro Therapy to build up his muscle around the joint as this is what occurs in this condition will help.
Obviously again this costs and I don't know in Turkey if they have such a thing. However they say that swimming can ease the discomfort, I suppose it is very much like a human in this respect.

I am sorry I cannot reassure you any further, but hope that Murphy does not suffer to much.

Hi,
Sorry to hear about Murphy, if iwas you i would firstly get a second opinion, if you haven't already done so.

I read an article in the Turkish Daily News Next big thing tourism for dog's.
Advertising campaign for owners in europe to bring their sick pets to Turkey for treatment.

Regards Ann
