Re: What? No Water?

[QUOTE:/DARREN] Few realise that one natural resource that Turkey has in comparative abundance is fresh water.

Ok, perhaps you know about the geopolitical and economic signifcance of the dams of the upper reaches of the Tigris and Euphrates in the GAP region, and the sensitivity of countries doesntream including Syria and Iraq...

But most people are not aware of the abundance of natural aquafers in coastal regions, where the water emerges from depths of 3000 meteres or more, filtered through a diversity of geological formations....

The best tasting water in the world. Decades ago on my first journeys through coastal Turkey, we never needed carry water with us, because all along the way, on the roads, there are ample natural spring taps to drink directly from the mountain sides...many with same spring basins quenching the thrists of travellers from ancient times....

Finding these springs you need to travel the old roads- before the modern highways were built.

And the natural water is not a trivial resource in miniscule quantities either...

Over the last 10 years the multinationals have been acquitring these supplies. Kraft, Nestle, Danone, my favortite tasting bottled water is Hayat, bought out some years ago. Pinar Su remains ripe for acquisition and the share prices on the Istanbul Stock Exchange has often been rife with take-over speculation [QUOTE]
