Re: The Last Post

I actually started posting on this thread yesterday but deleted it. The Last Post means a lot to many people, me included, that isn't entirely related to Remembrance Sunday. Hearing it is a time of reflection for me and I'd rather not have those thoughts spoilt by demeaning or belittling comments.

Re: The Last Post

I am with Philip on this one. I do not need to be told how and when to think or remember or what to wear when I do - that smacks more of repression than freedom of expression.

And since when has the poppy symbol become exclusive to "national pride"? Surely we remember all of the dead not just those of our nation? Have we forgotten the Anzacs? Did the French not die? What of the German schoolboys take and enrolled by their schoolmaster? Are they less worthy of our Remberance?

All of the young lads in any war were and are butchered, maimed, mutilated, sacrificed on the altar of profit, arms deals and political wheeling and dealing.

We should replace war memorials which depict the brave soldier proudly holding his bayonet by the reality of war - young men screaming, holding their intestines in their hands as they spilled out between their fingers, men amputated without anaesthetic, dying of dysentery, gangrene, psychologically damaged for life...

War is not a national pride - it is an atrocity, and abomination, it is obscene. It is an international disgrace that we are invading countries and starting wars, the "war to end all wars" has not stopped stop children being bombed in their schools or hospitals being shelled.

So I will wear a poppy if and when I like it or go to a church service or not and donate to which ever charity I choose but I will not be dictated to about how I show my own personal respect.

I think war memorials and their meaning has really gone over your head, maybe if you visit a few you will get a better understanding.

The significance of 'The Poppy', the how and what it signifies, also seems to have gone over your head, maybe if you visit The Royal British Legion someone will explain their take on it:

WHAT THE POPPY MEANS

The poppy is

A symbol of Remembrance and hope
Worn by millions of people
Red because of the natural colour of field poppies

The poppy is NOT

A symbol of death or a sign of support for war
A reflection of politics or religion
Red to reflect the colour of blood

Wearing a poppy is a personal choice and reflects individual and personal memories. It is not compulsory but is greatly appreciated by those it helps – our beneficiaries: those currently serving in our Armed Forces, veterans, and their families and dependants.

This video sends a good message.

Re: The Last Post

Unfortunately that's not how growing numbers see its use.

No one has any objection whatsoever to quiet reflection or acknowledgement by poppy of respect as they see it for the .fallen

However that's very different to the almost "compulsory remembrance " which appears to have crept into lives.

It used to be a day of remembrance, now it's a month. In the other link I posted the question of what football matches have to do with remembrance is also raised Then on the subject of freedom to chose -it used to be public dignitaries duly showed respect by wearing poppies - now public employees like BBC presenters are forced to comply

It's the compulsion that is disturbing as it is not only against the "freedoms " the fallen died for , but also creates a " them and us" atmosphere between wearers and those who chose not to

Robert Fisk, John Snow etc are as patriotic as the next man, but they see freedom of choice as being as precious as freedom of expression
